Beer Styles

Lager: Any bottom-fermented beer. All lager beers are fermented at cool temperatures to keep the flavor and balance of the malt and hops. Color can be from blonde to dark.

Ale: Any beer made with a top-fermenting yeast. Ales are produced to a wide variety of colors, palates and strengths and are fermented at warmer temperatures.

Pilsner: Any golden-colored, dry, bottom-fermenting beer that is characterized by the hoppiness of its flowery aroma and dry finish.

Porter: A lighter-bodied companion to stout, porters are roasty-tasting dark brews that are bottom-fermented.

Stout: A very dark, almost opaque top-fermented brew made with highly roasted malts. Most are full-bodied and creamy.

Weiss: German term for "white" beer (a pale brew made from wheat). These beers are light-bodied and top fermented with a yeast that produces a tart fruity palate.

Lambic: A spontaneously fermenting style brew unique to Belgium, these beers are brewed like champagne and therefore have a bubbly, sparkling texture and flavor.

Dunkel: German term for dark, mostly associated with Weiss beers.

Bock: This term refers to a strong beer and may be golden to dark brown in color with a sweeter palate.
